Purpose

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the Environmental Protection Agency intend to publish a joint Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for Children's Environmental Health and Disease Prevention Research Centers. The purpose of this program is to support a multidisciplinary program of applied and basic research along with an active community outreach translation effort to examine and translate the effects of early exposure to environmental hazards on children's health and wellbeing.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects and cores.

The FOA is expected to be published in Spring 2014 with an expected application due date in Summer 2014.

This FOA will utilize the P01 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights in the area of children's environmental health to consider applying for this new FOA.

In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise in children's health, reproductive and maternal health, environmental health sciences, exposure science, behavioral science, economics, and public health will be encouraged.

Research encouraged in this initiative may include (1) the impact of environmental exposures during critical developmental windows that impact children's health and well-being, including but not limited to preconception through childhood and early adolescence, (2) implementation of mitigation strategies or intervention studies to ameliorate the reported or known health effects of well-studied environmental hazards on children's health and (3) development of novel approaches and tools to measure biological response to exposure at the molecular and cellular level.

The FOA encourages the strong transdisciplinary teams of scientists including statisticians, economist along with community partners to develop an integrated research program to examine the effects of early environmental exposures on perturbations in normal development and children's health, and to improve the translation of existing knowledge or strategies to protect children for a lifetime.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
