OLAW IACUC Staff Outreach
OLAW IACUC Staff Outreach is a free online seminar series to help Institutional Animal Care and Use (IACUC) staff explore their responsibilities in the oversight of PHS-funded research that involves the use of live vertebrate animals.
Who may attend?
The series is tailored to IACUC staff members but IACUC members, veterinarians, compliance personnel, animal care staff and others involved in PHS-Assured institutions’ animal programs are welcome to attend the seminars.
What hardware and software will I need to attend the seminars?
The seminars will be presented using interactive meeting software licensed to NIH. You will not need to have the meeting software on your computer. To participate you will need a telephone for the audio portion and a computer with internet access for the visual portion. The computer must have Flash software installed; most computers do.
How will the seminars work?
About 15 minutes before the start of the seminar, registered attendees should enter the meeting url into their computer browser. When the browser connects to the url, OLAW receives notification that you are seeking entrance to the meeting and will grant permission to preregistered attendees. You will then be admitted to the visual portion of the meeting. Then the meeting software will telephone you at the number you provided when you registered. When you answer the phone, you will be connected to the audio portion of the meeting. The connections are made at no cost to the attendee.
How can I register?
To register for the seminar series, please send an email to olaw@od.nih.gov. Please include the following information in your email:
- Your email address. We prefer that you use an official email from your institution.
- A telephone number. Please provide a number that you can answer directly. You will be more comfortable if the telephone has a speakerphone feature or a headset.
- Include questions you have about the scheduled topic and suggestions for topics to be covered at future meetings.
- You can register for the entire series with one email. If you need to log in from a different computer or provide a different telephone number, just update us by email.
You may register at any time. However on the day of seminars, we will be too busy to process your registration, so please register in advance.
Who is responsible for the seminars?
The seminars are being conducted by the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW). The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) provides guidance and interpretation of the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, supports educational programs, and monitors compliance with the Policy by Assured institutions and PHS funding components to ensure the humane care and use of animals in PHS-supported research, testing, and training, thereby contributing to the quality of PHS-supported activities.
Susan Silk, M.S., Director of the Division of Policy and Education, OLAW and Jerry Collins, Ph.D., IACUC Chair, Yale University developed the OLAW IACUC Staff Outreach online seminars. Susan and Jerry will coordinate all of the seminars; subject matter experts from OLAW, public and private institutions will also participate in individual seminars.
When will the seminars be held?
Seminars will be held quarterly. All of the seminars will be held on Thursdays starting at 2PM Eastern time (1PM Central, 12 Noon Mountain, 11AM Pacific).
