POLICY ON SUPPORT OF LARGE-SCALE GENOME SEQUENCING PROJECTS

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases 
(NIAID) and the National Institute of Dental and 
Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) will accept and consider for 
funding, under the conditions presented below, research 
applications for large-scale genome sequencing of microbial 
pathogens and invertebrate vectors of high priority to NIAID 
and NIDCR.  Detailed information on the conditions can be

In summary, these conditions are:

1.  HIGH PRIORITY SEQUENCING TARGETS. Microorganisms and 
disease vectors for sequencing have been identified by NIAID 
or NIDCR as high priority. These priorities will be updated 
regularly. Applications for large scale sequencing of 
pathogens or vectors not on this priority list will be 
returned without review.
 
2.  APPLICATION POLICIES.  NIAID/NIDCR policies, including 
requirement for prior Institute approval and budget 
guidance, and for submission of applications are met.

3.  APPLICATION RECEIPT DATES.  Applications may be 
submitted for the following receipt dates: 

a.  February 1, 2000 for fiscal year 2001 awards.
b.  February 1, 2001 for fiscal year 2002 awards.
c.  February 1 annually thereafter.

4.  COOPERATIVE AGREEMENTS.  Applicants understand and 
accept terms and conditions to be incorporated in 
cooperative agreement (U01) awards that will be the funding 
mechanism for supporting large-scale sequencing projects. 

5.  PEER REVIEW CONSIDERATIONS.  Applications will be peer 
reviewed by a special review group convened by the NIH 
Center for Scientific Review (CSR).

6.  AWARD CONSIDERATIONS.  Only those applications that have 
received prior approval by the appropriate Institute will be 
accepted for peer review and consideration for funding.  In 
the event that more than one application proposing to 
sequence a given organism receives a favorable peer review, 
only one award will be made.

Applicants wishing to apply for support to sequence an 
organism not found on NIAID's or NIDCR�s priority lists, 
must do so in the context of an investigator-initiated, 
hypothesis-driven research project application (R01), 
subject to standard NIH acceptance and peer-review 
procedures.  Such applications must contain a substantial 
research component beyond genome sequencing.
