NEW NIDCD MULTIPLE PROJECT CENTER GRANTS (P50) PROGRAM Release Date: July 12, 1999 P.T. National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders This NOTICE serves to announce new guidelines that supercede prior guidelines for NIDCD Program Project (P01) and Clinical Center (P50) Grants and represent a substantive change for these programs. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) multiple project center grants (P50) will be used to support interdependent, interrelated, and multidisciplinary approaches to behavioral and biomedical research on hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language. Most research within the mission areas of the NIDCD can be best accomplished via the investigator-initiated individual research grant (R01), the research core center grant (P30)*, and the interactive research project grant (IRPG or interactive R01) mechanisms. There are special circumstances, in both basic and clinical research, however, that warrant the use of the P50 mechanism. The essential criteria for Multiple Project Center Grant (P50) eligibility are listed below. All four of the criteria must be met for an application to be considered appropriate for the P50 mechanism. 1. The P50 must be multidisciplinary; 2. Each subproject must be interdependent AND interrelated with at least one other subproject; 3. The feasibility of the research proposed on any subproject would be significantly diminished if that subproject were submitted as a traditional individual research grant (R01) application; and, 4. Each P50 must have a well-defined central unifying theme consisting of three or more subprojects with supporting cores as appropriate. Potential applicants for multiple project center grants (P50) are required to consult with NIDCD program staff and provide a written letter of intent before submission of an application. NIDCD will determine whether the planned project is, or is not, appropriate for the P50 mechanism. Only applications approved for submission will be accepted. Consultation with the NIDCD program staff is also required for renewal applications. Program staff are listed by program area at the end of this document under "STAFF CONSULTATION." SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS Applications will be accepted under these new guidelines beginning with the February 1, 2000 application receipt date. The receipt dates are the same for all new (Type 1), renewal (Type 2), and supplemental (Type 3) P50 applications. Applications (new, renewal, or revised) prepared using the old NIDCD Program Project (P01) and Clinical Center (P50) Grant Guidelines will be accepted only through the October 1, 1999 deadline. All applications for multiple project center grants (P50) received after October 1, 1999 must meet the new guidelines. STAFF CONSULTATION Inquiries about P50 applications should be directed to one of the NIDCD Program Administrators listed below. Consultation regarding competing continuation grant applications should be sought from the Program Administrator responsible for the existing P50/P01. HEARING: Drs. Donahue, Johnson, Luethke (email: amy_donahue@nih.gov; thomas_johnson@nih.gov; lynn_luethke@nih.gov) BALANCE: Dr. Sklare (email: daniel_sklare@nih.gov) SMELL/TASTE: Dr. Small (email: rochelle_small@nih.gov) VOICE/SPEECH: Dr. Ansel (email: beth_ansel@nih.gov) LANGUAGE: Dr. Cooper (email: judith_cooper@nih.gov) *The Research Core Center (P30) also represents a new program/mechanism for the NIDCD. The P30 is an institutional award to support centralized resources and facilities shared by investigators with existing research projects. The overall goal of a Core Center is to promote cooperative interaction among basic science and/or clinical investigators in a manner that will enrich the effectiveness of ongoing research and promote new research directions. More information about the P30 can be found at httphttp://www.nidcd.nih.gov/funding/types/p30_2003.pdf or from Dr. Donahue (amy_donahue@nih.gov).
