NCI INITIATIVES APPLICABLE TO PROSTATE CANCER RESEARCH Release Date: December 18, 1998 P.T. National Cancer Institute The National Cancer Institute (NCI) intends to increase its support for all forms of research on prostate cancer through the wide range of special mechanisms available. This includes the support of studies ranging from the molecular and genetic to clinical to population based. The NCI's goal is to speed the generation of new insights into the biology and behavior of this common tumor and increase the rate at which new insights are translated into more effective interventions for prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment. In addition to encouraging unique unsolicited ideas in all facets of prostate cancer, the NCI has put into place many innovative, more general initiatives that are suitable for participation by investigators with interest in prostate cancer. These diverse initiatives stem from NCI's conviction that there is a very powerful generality linking many of the most important themes in contemporary cancer research. The surest route to progress, therefore, is attacking prostate cancer by application and exploitation of these general themes. For this reason most of the initiatives are not disease-specific but address problems and opportunities common to all tumors and emphasize the development of technologies and approaches applicable to many cancers, including prostate. The purpose of this Notice is to bring relevant NCI initiatives to the attention of prostate cancer investigators, so that they may effectively capitalize on these opportunities. INQUIRIES Information on the initiatives and how they may relate to prostate cancer research, along with the NCI staff contacts for each is posted on the NCI home page at http://www.nci.nih.gov/prostate.html, or can be requested from the NCI contact listed below.
