NATIONAL ANIMAL WELFARE WORKSHOPS

The National Institutes of Health, Office for Protection from Research Risks is
continuing to sponsor workshops on implementing the Public Health Service Policy
on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.  Each of the workshops scheduled
for Fiscal Year 1998 will focus on a specific theme.  The workshops are open to
institutional administrators, members of Institutional Animal Care and Use
Committees, laboratory animal veterinarians, investigators and other
institutional staff who have responsibility for high-quality management of sound
institutional animal care and use programs.  Ample opportunities will be provided
to exchange ideas and interests through question and answer sessions and informal
discussions.

DESCRIPTION:  This workshop will provide participants with management concepts
for effective operation of their Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
(IACUC).  The subject to be emphasized include strategies for newly appointed
IACUC chairs to address their new responsibilities, selection and effective
participation of community members, practical implementation and documentation
of performance standards, and incorporation of the new ILAR occupational health
and safety guide recommendations into animal care and use activities, and
application of PHS Policy to on-PHS sponsored activities.
