Modification of Eligibility Criteria for PAR-10-066, International Research Scientist Development Award (IRSDA) (K01)

Notice Number: NOT-TW-11-006

Key Dates

Release Date: December 13, 2010

Issued by

Fogarty International Center (FIC)

Purpose

The purpose of this NOTICE is to modify the eligibility criteria of the Fogarty International Center (FIC) FOA, PAR-10-066 ( http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-10-066.html).

Eligibility

Currently under Section III Eligibility Information, 1.B., Eligible Individuals. The 2nd paragraph (Project Director/Principal Investigator) states:

Individuals who are already in tenure track positions or who already have independent peer-reviewed research support from the Federal Government are not eligible to apply to this program.

Also, the 4th paragraph (Degree and Research) currently states:

Candidates for this award must have a research or health-professional doctoral degree. FIC uses this support mechanism to support career development experiences that lead to research independence, therefore, tenure track faculty and principal investigators on NIH research awards are not eligible to apply.

The above two paragraphs in the FOA will be replaced with the following language:

The 2nd paragraph (Project Director/Principal Investigator) will read:

Individuals who already have independent peer-reviewed research support from the Federal Government or significant research support from other sources are not eligible to apply to this program.

The 4th paragraph (Degree and Research) will read:

Candidates for this award must have a research or health-professional doctoral degree. FIC uses this support mechanism to support career development experiences that lead to research independence, therefore, principal investigators on NIH research awards or significant research awards from other sources are not eligible to apply.

Candidates must be less than 5 years from last doctoral degree or fellowship at the time of application, except as noted below. Exceptions must be approved by the FIC Program Officer.

  • Time spent in a full time program of instruction or training (e.g. obtaining an M.P.H.) does not count toward the five year limit.
  • Candidates who are more than 5 years beyond the last eligible degree or fellowship, but who have interrupted their careers because of illness or family commitments may apply. They must clearly demonstrate the potential for productive independent research and the need for an additional period of mentored research experience in order to accomplish an effective scientific re-entry.

All other aspects of the FOA remain unchanged.
