National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), (http://www.ncrr.nih.gov/)

The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) announces a limited competition for competing continuation applications from Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE). COBRE awards are supported through the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Program, which aims to foster health-related research and increase the competitiveness of investigators at institutions located in states with historically low aggregate success rates for grant awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The objective of the COBRE program is to strengthen an institution's biomedical research infrastructure through the establishment of a thematic multi-disciplinary center and to enhance the ability of investigators to compete for independent investigator-initiated complementary NIH research grant or other external peer-reviewed support.

Eligibility is restricted 1) to institutions awarded a COBRE grant in response to Request for Applications (RFA) RR-02-007, (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RR-02-007.html), 2) to institutions awarded a COBRE grant in response to (RFA) RR-02-003, (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RR-02-003.html), but not awarded a competitive continuation in response to RFA-RR-06-001, (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RR-06-001.html), and 3) to institutions awarded a COBRE grant in response to (RFA) RR-00-006, (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RR-00-006.html), but not awarded a competitive continuation in response to RFA-RR-06-001, (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RR-06-001.html).

Information on the funded centers can be found at http://www.ncrr.nih.gov/resinfra/riidea/cobremaindirectory.asp. The purpose of the original awards was to augment and strengthen institutional biomedical research capacity through the development of thematic multi-disciplinary centers, led by peer-reviewed, funded investigators with expertise central to the research theme of the proposals. This competition will allow COBRE award recipients to continue the establishment of the resources and infrastructure necessary to maintain these centers. The deadline for receipt of applications is July 17, 2007. Support is contingent on availability of funds.

NCRR staff will contact all eligible applicants directly regarding application procedures, details and format.
