Purpose

This notice announces the open Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) Genome Analysis session in Stellenbosch, Republic of South Africa.

The NIH, in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust and the African Society of Human Genetics, launched the H3Africa Consortium in 2010. H3Africa is designed to facilitate a contemporary research approach to the study of the genomic and environmental determinants of common diseases in Africa, with the long-term goal of improving the health of African populations. The goals of H3Africa are to enhance genomic expertise among African scientists, to contribute to infrastructure development (particularly biorepositories and a bioinformatics network), and to establish collaborations among African investigators.  More information about the H3Africa initiative, and a white paper with recommendations for the program, can be found at www.h3africa.org.

This Notice is the announcement that the H3Africa Consortium will host a Genome Analysis Session, open to the public, on June 2, 2014. The session is titled “African Genomic Variation and Disease Gene Discovery”. The objectives of the session are to 1. Discuss strategies for disease gene discovery in African populations, and 2. Discuss the design of an H3Africa custom genotyping chip.
