Purpose

The purpose of this Notice is to announce NIH’s implementation of a new controlled access process to enable investigators to request access to multiple aggregate-level genomic datasets from the database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP). Aggregate datasets that are consented for general research use (GRU) have been combined into the Compilation of Aggregate Genomic Data study. Under the new process, it will be possible for an investigator to request access to the Compilation through a single request, which will be reviewed by a central Data Access Committee. This new process supplements data access procedures for dbGaP described in the Notices Policy for Sharing of Data Obtained in NIH Supported or Conducted Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) (NOT-OD-07-088) and Implementation Guidance and Instructions for Applicants: Policy for Sharing of Data Obtained in NIH-Supported or Conducted Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) (NOT-OD-08-013).

The steps taken to access the Compilation are the same as those that must be followed to request access to individual-level data in controlled access, and investigators accessing the data will be expected to follow standard GWAS data management practices and report annually on data use. For information about the steps involved in accessing the data, please refer to dbGaP Request Procedures to Access Individual-Level Data. Investigators approved to access the aggregate data study are expected to abide by the NIH Policy for Sharing of Data Obtained in NIH Supported or Conducted Genome-Wide Association Studies and the dbGaP Genomic User Code of Conduct.
