Purpose

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) will continue the Morris K. Udall Centers of Excellence in Parkinson's Disease Research program by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for new and renewal applications. The purpose of this Notice is to alert potential applicants and to provide lead time for the development of responsive projects.

This FOA will utilize the Specialized Center (P50) activity code, which will support a spectrum of basic, translational and clinical research activities utilizing an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to a specific disease entity, Parkinson's Disease (PD).

It is anticipated that this FOA will be published in autumn 2013 with an expected application due date in early winter 2014.

Research Initiative Details

The NINDS intends to solicit new and renewal applications for the Morris K. Udall Centers of Excellence for Parkinson’s Disease Research program, a consortium of specialized Centers that work collaboratively as well as independently to define the causes of and discover improved treatments for this disease. Individual Centers establish unique, interdisciplinary programs that optimize available expertise in basic, translational and clinical research required to advance PD research. The overall theme, proposed research projects and integral cores of each Center relate directly to the etiology, pathogenesis or treatment of PD and related parkinsonian disorders. A considerable degree of collaboration among investigators is required to achieve the overarching objectives of each Center. Each proposal must include at least one translational research project focusing on the development of therapeutics, diagnostics, or clinical criteria that will inform new approaches for the treatment of PD. Notably, as Centers of Excellence, Udall Centers serve as regional and national resources for PD research. Successful applicants will participate in the network of existing Udall Centers to foster the translation of scientific findings into novel treatments for PD.

Applicants may request maximum annual direct costs of $1,500,000.

Full details will be available in the FOA.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
