Notice of Intent to Publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement for Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC) Resources promoting Translational Research Advancements in Neurodegenerative Diseases (U24)

Notice Number: NOT-NS-11-011

Key Dates
Release Date: February 15, 2011

Issued by
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)

Purpose

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) intends to publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA)  to promote the continued development of publically available, well characterized induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) research resources that will enable and encourage collaborative research among academic and industry investigators and ultimately accelerate basic science discoveries and therapeutic development for late-onset neurodegenerative diseases.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The FOA is expected to be published in spring 2011 with an expected receipt date in early summer 2011.

This FOA will utilize the Research-related Resource cooperative agreement (U24) activity code. Details of the planned Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators who have expertise in somatic cell reprogramming, neurodegenerative disease biology, translational research, drug discovery and the creation of publically available, well characterized iPSC resources for neurodegenerative diseases to consider applying for this new Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA).  In December 2010, a Workshop was convened by NINDS to review technologies and resources developed by iPSC consortia investigators funded by NINDS through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). (http://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/areas/neurodegeneration/2nd_iPSC_Consortia_Workshop.htm )    Given the insights and recommendations provided at the workshop, and the challenges still to be addressed in applying iPSC resources to the pre-clinical drug discovery process, NINDS recognizes the unique opportunity to bring academic and industry researchers together to share expertise in drug development, stem cell biology and neurodegenerative disease biology.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
