The mission of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans.  AHRQ achieves this mission by supporting a broad program of health services research, as well as working with partners to promote improvements in clinical and health systems practices, including the prevention of diseases and other health conditions. AHRQ-supported research programs are intended to (1) improve clinical practice, (2) improve the health care system's ability to provide access to and deliver high quality, high-value health care, and (3) provide policymakers with the ability to assess the impact of system changes on outcomes, quality, access to, cost, and use of health care services.

To assist AHRQ in fully achieving its’ mission, AHRQ will fund projects that support the adaptation and implementation of research products, tools, and interventions that are ready to be used and actionable.  AHRQ is particularly interested in research that tests the use of evidence-based tools and interventions in health care settings.  AHRQ will support projects that build upon or expand ongoing health services research to demonstrate the impact of products, tools, and interventions.  For example, such efforts may include, but are not limited to:

With this Special Emphasis Notice AHRQ is identifying research adaptation and implementation as a priority topic for R03 small research grant applications.  Applicants are encouraged to focus R03 grant applications on products, tools, and interventions developed in AHRQ-funded projects.  Applications that focus exclusively on the implementation of health information technology are discouraged.  Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate substantial expertise in research translation and implementation or partner with individuals and organization with such expertise.  Applicants should review the AHRQ Small Research Program (R03) Funding Opportunity Announcement (see https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-06-448.html) for complete information about the grant application process and submission requirements.  Applicants are also encouraged to contact AHRQ staff early in the process of preparing applications.  A listing of AHRQ staff contacts can be found at: http://www.ahrq.gov/fund/staffcon.htm.
