Notice of Intent to Publish Request for Applications for System Biology Approach to the Mechanism of TB Latency and Reactivation (R01)

Notice Number: NOT-HL-10-101

Key Dates
Release Date:  October 23, 2009

Issued by
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov)

Purpose

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) intends to issue Requests for Applications (RFA) to solicit applications for the System Biology Approach to the Mechanism of TB Latency and Reactivation (R01). The goal of this initiative is to investigate the mechanisms of latency and the reactivation of tuberculosis in the host using collaborative systems biology approaches based primarily on human studies.  The studies should include multiscale computational modeling and emphasize host lung responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and host-microbial interactions, using genomic, proteomic, or other “omics” data and integrating this with immunological data.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to use the multiple principal investigator mechanism to facilitate collaborations among investigators with expertise in mathematics and computational multiscale modeling, bioengineering, biophysics, and clinical investigators and experimental biologists who have expertise in tuberculosis, pulmonology, lung biology, immunology, microbiology, genomics, genetics, other “omics,” and infectious diseases.

The RFA’s (RFA-HL-10-015 and RFA-HL-10-022) will be issued for Systems Biology Centers and Data Coordinating Centers respectively.

This notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.  The RFAs are expected to be published in the Fall of 2009 with an expected receipt date in Spring 2010.

These RFAs will utilize the R01 grant mechanism.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
