Notice Number: NOT-HL-08-104
Release Date: October 18, 2007
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/)
The purpose of this Notice is to announce the NHLBI’s intention to issue a Request for Applications (RFA) in the late fall of 2007 to fund up to six awards in fiscal year 2008 to develop and validate efficient, accessible large-scale genome-wide targeted resequencing, drawing upon available massively parallel single-molecule DNA sequencing and region-specific DNA capture technologies. NHLBI’s ultimate goal is to apply this technology to large numbers of DNA samples from NHLBI’s well-phenotyped populations in a future phase.
Recognition of the power of conventional resequencing of candidate genes to detect highly informative, low frequency disease alleles provides the motivation for finding more cost-effective approaches that would allow expansion of resequencing to large numbers of genes and individuals. Recent advances in the development of single-molecule DNA sequencing technologies and efficient methods for capturing specific genomic segments are bringing the goal of large-scale targeted human genome resequencing in thousands of humans within reach. Multiple approaches could be responsive to this RFA and the awardees participating in this effort will be expected to work collaboratively. Applications in response to this RFA will be for short-term awards involving the development of the technologies and standardized measures of success. Investigators would validate their approaches in small to medium scale-up of the technologies. Applicants will be expected to provide comprehensive proposals not only for the experimental component of the work, but also for data management and data analysis methods.
The receipt date for applications is projected to be in the late winter of 2008.
This Notice encourages investigators with the laboratory technology, data management and analysis capabilities, and resource infrastructure necessary to carry out the proposed program to begin to consider applying for this new RFA.
APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
