Notice of the NHLBI Program on Mechanisms Linking Short Sleep Duration and Risk of Obesity or Overweight

Notice Number: NOT-HL-06-106

Key Dates
Release Date: September 23, 2005

Issued by
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/)

The purpose of this Notice is to announce the intention to issue a Request for Applications (RFA) in the fall of 2005 aimed at elucidating mechanisms and cause-and-effect relationships underlying the association between short sleep duration and the increased risk of obesity or overweight due to altered metabolism, appetite, or inflammation. The receipt date for applications would be in winter 2005. The primary focus is to support new projects integrating recent advances in understanding the relationship between sleep and endocrine regulation with our understanding of metabolic and appetite regulation using cellular and systems level approaches. It is expected that clinical paradigms and animal models of sleep deprivation that identify downstream relationships that are mechanistically most important to the risk of obesity and related cardiopulmonary disease risks in habitual short sleepers will be of particular interest. Please note that elucidating mechanisms of sleep regulation and environmental or behavioral sources of sleepiness is not expected to be a goal of this program.

It is envisioned that projects will be conducted by multidisciplinary teams of investigators. This Notice is to encourage investigators who believe that they have sufficient expertise to form these collaborations and begin considering applying for this RFA program.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
