Research Objectives

NICHD Specific Language

NICHD plans to support novel research leading to improved understanding of the effects of environmental exposures on unipotent (gonocyte, spermatogonia, oogonia), multipotent (primordial germ cells, epithelial, and mesenchymal gonadal stem cells), and pluripotent (embryonic stem cells, iPSC, differentiation into germ cell lineage) stem cells throughout development (preimplantation and postimplantation embryonic periods, fetal, early postnatal, pubertal, adult). As exposure in utero during preimplantation and/or postimplantation may be associated with results distinct from exposure during puberty or adulthood, studies investigating the Windows of Susceptibility (e.g. age - associated and/or latency periods) are of importance. Studies of potential transgenerational effects (including genetic or epigenetic aspects) are also encouraged.

Section I. Funding Opportunity Description

Section II. Award Information

Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards

NICHD intends to commit a total of $300,000 to fund up to two awards for fiscal year 2012. Future year amounts will depend on annual appropriations.

All other aspects of these FOAs remain unchanged.
