Purpose

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) intends to promote the integration of environmental factors into studies of children’s health by publishing three distinct but integrated Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA) that solicit applications in support of a Children’s Health Exposure Analysis Resource (CHEAR). CHEAR focuses specifically on providing access to infrastructure for comprehensive exposure analysis to existing epidemiological cohort studies involving research into children’s health.

Exposures measured by CHEAR will encompass the breadth of the exposome, the totality of biological, psycho-social, chemical and physical exposures through the use of both targeted and non-targeted methods of analysis. The program will also include the characterization of associated biological response indicators to provide additional information on exposures and their mechanistic effects. CHEAR will provide standardized analysis of samples and data as well as a data repository. This will enable an integration of exposure analysis across studies to integrate the combined contributions of multiple environmental factors as determinants of children’s health across a range of diseases and disorders.

The FOAs are intended for release in March 2015 with an expected application due date in late Spring 2015.

The FOA will utilize the U2C activity codes. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

The CHEAR National Exposure Assessment Laboratory Network (UC2) will be a network of laboratories providing a comprehensive suite of laboratory-based analytical services for samples (e.g., cord blood, blood, urine, teeth, and saliva) derived from extant or ongoing children's health studies. Each hub within the network must have expertise in providing analysis of environmental (e.g. metals, pesticides) and endogenous (e.g. nutrients, hormones) stressors through both targeted and untargeted approaches. Each hub will also have expertise in assessing biological response indicators such as DNA damage, oxidative stress, immune/inflammation indicators, and other molecular markers. Experience in providing chemical analysis and biomarker research as a service, including assessment of overarching issues such as evaluation of batch effects, protocol development, and quality control, is expected. Applicants must also be able to provide technical consultation, informatics support, and a system for sample tracking.

This network of laboratories will interact with other CHEAR components.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
