Purpose

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the US EPA intend to renew an initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for Children's Environmental Health and Disease Prevention Research Centers.  The purpose of this program is to support a multidisciplinary program of applied and basic research along with an active community outreach translation effort to examine and translate the effects of early exposure to environmental hazards on children's health and wellbeing.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The FOA is expected to be published in FALL 2011 with an expected receipt date in WINTER 2012.

This FOA will utilize the P01 activity code.  Details of the planned FOA are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights in the area of Children's Environmental Health to consider applying for this new FOA.

In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise in environmental health sciences, exposure science, behavioral science, economics, and public health will be encouraged and these investigators should also consider applying.

Research encouraged in this initiative may include but is not limited to: (1) the impact of environmental exposures during critical developmental windows that impact children's health and well-being, (2) development of intervention strategies to ameliorate the known health effects of well-studied environmental hazards on children's health, and (3) development of novel approaches and tools to assess biological response to exposure at the molecular and cellular level.  We encourage the development of strong transdisciplinary teams of scientists, statisticians, economist, community partners to develop a strong and integrated research program to examine the effects of early environmental exposures on perturbations in normal development and children's health, and to improve the translation of existing knowledge or strategies to protect children from the harmful effects of exposure to environmental chemicals and hazards.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
