Purpose

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) intends to publish a Request for Applications (RFA) for Phase II of the NIBIB Quantum Program.  The Program’s goal is to achieve a profound (quantum) impact on the detection, prevention, diagnosis or treatment of a major disease or national public health problem (e.g., leading categories of disease burden, high-mortality/morbidity diseases affecting more than 100,000 individuals annually, technologies that revolutionize over 200,000 procedures annually) through the development and implementation of biomedical technologies.  The Phase II award will support research with the goal of developing the target technology and using it to complete first-in-human or early phase clinical studies within the Phase II award period, and demonstrate the potential for a quantum advance.  This notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

The RFA is expected to be published in November 2009 with an expected receipt date in January 2010.   This RFA is expected to utilize the U01 Research Project Cooperative Agreement mechanism.

Applicants need not have received a Phase I award to submit a Phase II application, however, responsive applications must demonstrate that substantial pre-clinical or a first clinical implementation, showing the potential of the quantum advance, will be completed by the end of the Phase II.  See the (expired) Phase I RFA at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-EB-07-001.html for details of what a competitive application must address.  Phase II projects up to five years may be requested.

Additional information about the NIBIB Quantum Program can be found at http://www.nibib.nih.gov/Research/QuantumGrants.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOT BEING SOLICITED AT THIS TIME.
