Administrative Supplement Program

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) announces the continuation of a program first announced on November 24, 2004 (NOT-DK-05-004) that supports medical students who choose to take a year off from their medical school studies to pursue a year of research training.  NIDDK will provide administrative supplements to NIDDK training grants to support these students.

The NIDDK conducted a three-year pilot program at a selected group of institutions to determine the interest in, and utility of, allowing medical students to spend a year training with an investigator associated with both a DK-supported Center and a DK-supported T32 program.  Seventeen students were supported over this three year period at five of the six selected sites.   In the three years subsequently, an additional 15 students were supported at nine locations. 

The NIDDK will now allow any institution with as NIDDK Institutional NRSA training grant (T32) to submit applications for highly motivated medical students to take a year off from their studies to pursue a research training experience supported by this Medical Student Research Training (MSRT) program. Support will be via supplements to the already funded training grant.

Usually, no more than two applications per institution will be funded.  Support will be at the predoctoral stipend level in effect for the year in which the supplement is issued.  An institutional allowance and travel to a scientific meeting are also allowable expenses.
Students must have completed at least one full year of medical school by the time they begin their year of research training, must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and must not hold the PhD, or other doctoral level, research degree.  Students do not have to be from the institution at which they will receive training.  All students must have concurrence from the Dean of their medical school to participate.
