The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Diseases (NIDDK) announces that it will participate in the NIH Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Program (Parent R21) which may found at https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-06-181.html.  Information about NIDDK’s R21 program can be found at http://www2.niddk.nih.gov/Funding/Grants/ApplicantGuidelines/R21.htm . 

NIDDK supports both clinical and basic research through programs in its Extramural Divisions as described below:

Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases (DEM):

DEM provides research funding and support for basic and clinical research in the areas of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and other metabolic disorders, including cystic fibrosis; endocrinology and endocrine disorders; obesity, neuroendocrinology, and energy balance; and development, metabolism, and basic biology of liver, fat, and endocrine tissues. DEM also provides funding for the training and career development of individuals committed to academic and clinical research careers in these areas.

Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition (DDN):


DDN has responsibility for managing programs in basic and clinical research, as well as training and career development, related to liver and biliary diseases; pancreatic diseases; gastrointestinal disease, including neuroendocrinology, motility, immunology, absorption, and transport in the gastrointestinal tract; nutrient metabolism; obesity; and eating disorders.

Division of Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases (KUH):

KUH provides research funding and support for basic science and clinical research studies of the kidney and urinary tract and disorders of the blood and blood-forming organ.

Applicants with research interest in areas important to the NIDDK mission, who are considering applying to the Parent R21 announcement, are encouraged to consult with NIDDK Program Staff before submitting an application.
