Purpose
NIDA and the following NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs), NIAAA, NICHD, NCI intend to publish a Collaborative Research on Addiction at NIH (CRAN) funding opportunity announcement to solicit applications for a Data Analysis and Informatics center to oversee and manage the standardization of data collection procedures, provide technical support, ensure quality control, perform integrative data analysis, and coordinate data storage and data sharing activities for overall project management of the national multi-site longitudinal study consortium. The goal of the project is to establish a national, multisite, multi-modal, longitudinal cohort study to prospectively examine the neurodevelopmental and behavioral effects of substance use from early adolescence (approximately age 9-10) through the period of risk for substance use and substance use disorders. The primary objective of this initiative is o design and implement a study that can address the following overarching research questions: (1) What is the impact of diverse patterns of substance use on the structure and function of the developing brain? (2) What are the consequences of substance use on physical health, psychosocial development, cognition (e.g., information processing, learning, memory, decision making), academic achievement, motivation, emotional regulation, and other behaviors? (3) How does substance use affect the expression (e.g., onset, course, severity) of psychopathology, including substance use disorders, and how does the emergence of psychopathology influence substance use? (4) What factors (e.g., prenatal exposure, genetic, epigenetic, neurobiological, demographic, psychosocial, familial, ecological) influence the trajectories of substance use and its consequences? (5) In what ways does the use of specific substances contribute to the use of other substances (so-called gateway interactions)?
This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations, identify program faculty, and create responsive applications.
The FOA is expected to be published in January 2015 with an expected application due date in April 2015.
This FOA will utilize the U01 activity code. Details of the planned FOA are provided below.
Research Initiative Details
The Data Analysis and Informatics Center will develop the procedures for collection of the core neuroimaging, neuropsychological, and clinical assessment data in a manner that will maximize comparability across the individual research sites of the consortium. The center will perform data analysis for the core measures collected from the research sites. The center will facilitate cross-site pooling of data, statistical analysis and data sharing within and outside of the consortium, create a database across assessment modalities, and harmonize with existing large-scale neurodevelopmental research efforts. Due to the large volume of data acquired in this study, applicants may propose the development of a new centralized or cloud-based data storage and retrieval solution, or may leverage existing secure bioinformatics platforms for scientific collaboration and data-sharing.
This FOA will run in parallel with companion FOAs that solicit applications for Research Project Sites and a Consortium Coordinating Center. All consortium components (individual research project sites, a data analysis and informatics center, and a coordinating center) must be linked and coordinated at the time of submission, with each application originating from the Program Director(s)/Principal Investigator(s) research institution. It is expected that investigators upon funding will work jointly with federal staff at NIDA, NCI, NIAAA, and NICHD to achieve study goals.
