Drug abuse, through its effects on sexual decision making, increases the risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV/AIDS. NIDA intends to issue a PAS, with set-aside funds for FY2007, for research on the role of drug abuse on sexual risk taking.  The focus of the research should be on how drug abuse affects decision-making processes and mechanisms that mediate high risk sexual behavior.  Research supported by this PAS will emphasize interdisciplinary studies that incorporate approaches from psychology, economics, neuroscience and computational modeling.  Investigations should focus on the complex interaction of drug effects, decision making and high risk sexual behavior.   Research on the role of emotion, expectancies, attitudes, impulsivity, and stress as well as on the interaction among these factors is needed.  Hypothesis driven research and modeling approaches will help to guide empirical testing and will be encouraged.  Both laboratory based research and investigations in naturalistic settings are critically important and should be integrated in a single proposal where it is feasible.
