Notice of Intent to Publish a Request for Applications (RFA) titled: Developmental Centers for Translational Research on the Clinical Neurobiology of Drug Addiction

Notice Number: NOT-DA-05-014

Release Date: September 23, 2005

Issued by
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), (http://www.nida.nih.gov)

The National Institute on Drug Abuse, with other possible participating NIH Institutes and Centers (IC's), intend to reissue a Request for Applications (RFA) soliciting applications for the establishment of Developmental Centers for Translational Research on the Clinical Neurobiology of Drug Addiction. The RFA is expected to be published in October 2005. Specifically, for this RFA, the concept of a translational research center on the neurobiology of drug abuse is an entity with a primary clinical/human neurobiology focus in which preclinical research directly informs or provides a mechanistic foundation for the clinical research and the preclinical science is, itself, informed and modified by the outcomes of the clinical research. The primary aim of this RFA is to support early stage development of interdisciplinary teams of investigators dedicated to the integrated study of the impact of drug exposure, abuse, and addiction on the human brain and to position these teams to compete successfully for Centers for Translational Research on the Clinical Neurobiology of Drug Addiction that will be established in a future initiative. Successful applications will demonstrate a strategy for the establishment of a Developmental Center that will provide a structure for the support of the team's goals that must clearly integrate animal studies in the context of an overall clinical neurobiologic study, a strong scientific rationale for both the composition of the team and the role of the team members, a demonstrated institutional commitment to the Center, and a clear exposition of a plan for the continuation of the program.
