STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY OF MEMBRANE PROTEINS (PA-02-060) ADDENDUM Release Date: February 21, 2002 NOTICE: NOT-DA-02-004 National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) (http://www.nida.nih.gov) PURPOSE This addendum is to program announcement (PA) PA-02-060, which was released in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts on February 11, 2002 at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-02-060.html. This PA is intended to support research on the structure of membrane proteins at atomic resolution. This addendum adds the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) as a participating institute in this program announcement. The NIDA is interested in furthering the understanding of membrane protein receptors and transporters, their structure, and their interaction with ligands relevant to drug abuse research. These proteins include: the cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors, the vanilloid receptor, the orphanin receptor, the mu, delta, and kappa opioid receptors, the neuronal nicotinic receptor subtypes, the NMDA receptor complex, the metabotropic glutamate receptors I-III, the GABA-A receptor, and the dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine transporters and any other neuropeptide receptors that are affected by drugs of abuse. Applicants are encouraged to develop techniques to express, solubilize, purify, and stabilize these receptors and transporters, and to obtain structural information (diffraction, NMR, microscopy) on single particles or crystals, as described in the PA.
