DRUG ABUSE RESEARCH FOR AREA INSTITUTIONS Release Date: September 17, 2001 NOTICE: NOT-DA-01-012 National Institute on Drug Abuse (http://www.nida.nih.gov) PURPOSE As part of its ongoing commitment to expanding the diversity of its program of extramural research and utilizing the talent of scientists outside major research institutions, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is releasing this notice to remind the extramural community of the availability of Academic Research Enhancement Awards (AREA Grants) and to indicate that funding of AREA grants will be an Institute priority during Fiscal Year 2002. The AREA program is intended to create a research opportunity for scientists and institutions that are otherwise unlikely to participate extensively in NIH programs. The program targets domestic institutions that provide baccalaureate training or advanced degrees in sciences related to health, but that are not major recipients of NIH funds. Details on eligibility and clarification of the term not major recipients of NIH funding may be found in the NIH-wide Program Announcement, Academic Research Enhancement Award that is available at: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-99-062.html The following URL allows applicants to determine their eligibility to apply under this program: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/area.htm. NIDA’s funding determinations are based on the scientific and technical merit of the application under consideration, programmatic priorities, and the availability of funds. In Fiscal Year 2002, NIDA will give particular emphasis to expanding its research portfolio to AREA applicants and encourages AREA-eligible applicants to apply for research support of biomedical or behavioral studies relevant to drug abuse. Investigators may request support of basic or applied research, and NIDA supports research from the perspectives of many scientific disciplines. Further information on the areas of NIDA’s interest may be found at http://www.nida.nih.gov. Additional information on completing AREA applications may be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-01-032.html. For additional information on NIDA’s AREA program, please contact: Dr. Teresa Levitin Director, Office of Extramural Affairs National Institute on Drug Abuse 6001 Executive Blvd., Rm. 3158, MSC 9547 Bethesda, MD 20892-9547 Email: TL25U@NIH.GOV Telephone: 301-443-2755
