Purpose

This Notice is to inform potential applicants that the National Cancer Institute (NCI) will participate in Request for Application (RFA) RFA-ES-11-010, entitled "Environmental Influences on Stem Cells in Development, Health and Disease (R21)", issued by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The NCI seeks applications that are focused on understanding the potential of environmental exposures to alter function, proliferation, survival, and differentiation of stem cells, including pluripotent and multipotent cells.  Of specific interest to NCI is research directed at understanding the influence of environmental exposures on the molecular and biochemical regulation of embryonic and adult stem cell behavior as it relates to tumorigenesis, disease progression, and responses to therapy.

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance Number:

93.393

The Components of Participating Organizations section of RFA-ES-11-010 has been revised to include NCI:

Components of Participating Organizations include:

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)
National Center for Research Resources (NCRR)
Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)
National Cancer Institute (NCI)

Section I. Funding Opportunity Description of RFA-ES-11-010 is amended by the following text:

NCI-Specific Scientific Focus. NCI is interested in research projects relevant to the following aspects:

Research proposals for NCI consideration may focus on any cancer site. Studies of the role of early exposure of stem cells as a factor leading to tumorigenesis are appropriate for this FOA. However, applications focused on studies of established cell lines will be non-responsive and not considered for NCI funding.

Section II. Award Information, Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards is amended as follows:

In addition, the NCI intends to commit up to $200,000 in FY 2012 to fund one award.
