Purpose

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) announces the availability of funds in Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) for administrative supplements in AIDS-associated malignancies to ongoing NCI-funded research projects.  The funds available through these administrative supplements are intended to encourage and support new multidisciplinary scientific collaborations among eligible NCI grantees and between those grantees and other members of the scientific community.  This initiative, known as the NCI Activities to Promote Research Collaborations in AIDS-Associated Malignancies (NCI APRC-AAM), supports collaborative interdisciplinary activities that bring together ideas and approaches from disparate scientific disciplines.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the NCI APRC-AAM administrative supplements, the requestor must be the principal investigator (PI) of an active R01, R37, P01, U01, R33, R42, or R44 grant, which has at least one full year remaining at the time of anticipated funding (September 1, 2009).  No other grant mechanisms are eligible.

Moreover, to be eligible, the parent grant must be active, and the research proposed in the supplement must be accomplished within the competitive segment.

The proposed collaborative activity must remain within the overall scope of the active “parent” award but must also reflect new collaborative interactions that enhance the originally funded project.

IMPORTANT:  The research proposed by the NIH grantee in the supplement application must be within the original scope of the NIH-supported grant project.  The funding mechanism being used to support this program, administrative supplements, can be used to cover cost increases that are associated with achieving certain new research objectives as long as they are within the original scope of the project.  Any cost increases need to result from making modifications to the project in order to take advantage of opportunities that would increase the value of the project consistent with its originally approved objectives and purposes.
A full description of the NCI APRC-AAM Program and the FY09 guidelines can be found at http://dcb.nci.nih.gov/newsdetail.cfm?ID=36; on those web pages, the opportunities available to NCI grantees for collaborative activities funded with administrative supplements to their active grants and the mechanisms for requesting these supplements are described.
