The NIH Autoimmune Rat Model Repository and Development Center
announces the availability of breeding stock of standard and new rat
strains for research on autoimmune disorders. Information concerning
rat strains currently available and nearing release is available from
the resource managers listed below and will be listed on the resource
web site at: http://www.ors.od.nih.gov/dirs/vrp/ratcenter/.

The NIH Autoimmune Rat Model Repository and Development Center was
established in 2000 and is funded by the National Institute of
Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS). The purpose
of the Repository is to facilitate the availability of genetically-
standardized rat strains for experimental research of the role of
autoimmunity in diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis,
systemic lupus erythematosus, encephalomyelitis, spondyloarthropathy,
and other diseases. The NIH Animal Genetic Resource of the Veterinary
Resources Program, Office of Research Services, NIH operates the
Autoimmune Rat Model Repository and Development Center.

Resource Objectives
1. To acquire, characterize, establish, develop, and cryopreserve
foundation colonies of genetically-characterized autoimmune rat models.
All strains will be re-derived on arrival to eliminate disease
pathogens and parasites that may complicate research. Breeding stock
will be available to qualified biomedical investigators worldwide.

2. To assist autoimmune research investigators in the development of
novel and enhanced models using special breeding schemes to obtain
inbred (e.g., standard inbred strains, congenic, recombinant inbred,
consomic, recombinant congenic) and outbred models. Projects will be
selected using criteria established with the assistance of an Advisory
Group consisting of NIH intramural, extramural and international
investigators.

Inquiries regarding the availability of rat models of autoimmune
disorders should be addressed to:
