RFA Announcement: B Cell Immunology for Protective HIV Vaccines

Notice Number: NOT-AI-07-020

Key Dates
Release Date: January 19, 2007

Issued by
National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), (http://www.niaid.nih.gov)

Description

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases intends to issue two funding opportunities to support studies of B cell immunology related to mechanisms by which broadly protective neutralizing anti-HIV-1 antibodies can be induced and maintained: (1)  the U01 Cooperative Agreement grant program will support basic immunology research on B cell and antibody regulation, and (2) the R21 Exploratory/Development grant program will support basic immunology research on B cell and antibody regulation.  The two RFAs are expected to be published in March 2007.  These programs are intended to create new collaborative research enterprises focused on a key parameter for HIV-1 vaccine development: defining the basic immune mechanisms by which effective and robust neutralizing antibodies can be elicited in uninfected individuals to protect against a broad range of HIV-1 strains. New basic research in this area is important to the development of preventive vaccines for HIV-1.
