Purpose:

1. To encourage submission of applications for the K22 Research Scholar Development Award by extending application submission dates under PAR-02-018 (http://grants2.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-02-018.html) until October 1, 2006 for non-AIDS applications and January 2, 2007 for AIDS applications. The NIAID K22 continues to be a two year, non-renewable transition award that supports postdoctoral scientists (postdocs) as they move to positions of assistant professors. Awards under this program continue to be limited to citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States or to individuals who have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States.
2. To modify eligibility requirements for the NIAID K22 by including:
1. Any postdoc who is working in a laboratory presently supported by an NIAID research grant or cooperative agreement, including the following mechanisms: R01, R21, R18, R24, R37, R43, R44, R41, R42, P01, P30, P50, U01, U19, U24, U54, UC1, and UC7. Earlier eligibility requirements excluded anyone who was not an NIAID intramural postdoc, or an extramural postdoc currently supported on an NIAID training grant, fellowship or diversity supplement.
2. An eligible postdoc for the NIAID K22 is now defined as any intra- or extramural postdoc who has received a research doctoral degree within the past five years and who will be applying for positions of assistant professor within the next year. Eligible doctoral degrees include: Ph.D, M.D., D.O., D.D.S., D.V.M., O.D., D.P.M., Sc.D., and D.N.S. In most cases, postdocs in their first two years will not be eligible since they will not be seeking assistant professor positions.

All other requirements in PAR-02-018 remain in effect.

Applicants for the NIAID K22 must document that their salary is supported on one of the eligible NIAID grants or cooperative agreements and must provide the grant number and name of the Principal Investigator of that grant in their application.
