NIH Academic Research Enhancement
Award (AREA) Grants - (R15)

AREA grants support small research projects in the biomedical and behavioral sciences conducted by students and faculty in health professional schools, and other academic components that have not been major recipients of NIH research grant funds (note that eligibility is determined at the time of application). Currently, NIH considers the following to be health professional schools/colleges:  School/College of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Podiatry, Nutrition, Dentistry, Osteopathy, Pharmacy, Public Health, Optometry, Nursing, Chiropractic Medicine, and Allied Health.  All other NIH funding is considered “Other Academic.”  The list of ineligible schools/colleges/components is provided below and is updated annually.

  • Schools/Components Eligible and Ineligible to Apply for AREA Grants in FY 2007 and 2008 (01/29/2008) - (Excel - 212 KB). This list applies to applications submitted for the following dates: February 25, 2008, June 25, 2008, and October 25, 2008 (for AIDS applications: January 7, 2008, May 7, 2008, and September 7, 2008).

  • Deadlines for AREA grant applications:
    • Standard application deadlines: new, revised (amended), or renewal (continuation, type 2) are February 25, June 25, and October 25 (or the next business day if the date falls on a weekend or Federal holiday) - see 09/30/2005 NIH Guide Notice.
    • AIDS-related research deadlines are January 7, May 7, and September 7.

  • Electronic Submission– NIH will require electronic submission of the SF424 (R&R) form through Grants.gov to NIH for all AREA grant applications for the February 25, 2006 application deadline and beyond.

    • Registration – The NIH electronic submission process requires institutional registration in two separate systems: Grants.gov and eRA Commons. Principal Investigators also must be registered in eRA Commons. These registration processes can take up to four weeks (possibly longer for new organizations) to complete. All registrations must be in place prior to application submission. For additional information on preparing for electronic submission to NIH please visit: http://era.nih.gov/ElectronicReceipt/preparing.htm.

  • Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research - Principal Investigators holding an active Academic Research Enhancement Award (R15) Grant also may apply for a supplement under this program. Grantees with support from these mechanisms must check with the appropriate awarding component before an application for a supplement is submitted. Awardees of the R15 grants may apply only when the candidate is a high school or an undergraduate student. However, exceptions to these rules may be made. Applicants should check with their awarding components. Supplements to the R15 may provide support above the established dollar limits. A full description of these additional funding opportunities and procedures for submitting requests for supplements are contained in the November 19, 2004 NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts Program Announcements linked above.

  • Review Criteria for AREA Applications - Review Criteria for AREA Applications - AREA applications are evaluated using the standard NIH review criteria for unsolicited research grants. Reviewers will assess the AREA-specific programmatic features of an application under the Investigator and Environment criteria.
